Chelsea suffered a shock defeat – their first under Thomas Tuchel – to relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion, and Owen Hargreaves was less than impressed with one man.
Owen Hargreaves thinks Kurt Zouma could be dropped by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel after his performance against West Bromwich Albion.
Despite Christian Pulisic opening the scoring against the Baggies at Stamford Bridge, the 19th-placed side went on to score five and end Tuchel’s 14-game unbeaten run.
Zouma partnered Thiago Silva in the Blues’ defence, but the latter was sent off just 29 minutes into the game, meaning Chelsea spent the majority of the game with a man less than their opponents.
Antonio Rudiger, who’s played plenty of football under the new Chelsea boss, started on the bench for the game with Premier League action returning after the two-week international break.
Hargreaves, when speaking to Premier League Productions, was critical of Zouma, who played as the left centre-back at Stamford Bridge.
He said: “Callum Robinson came on and affected the game brilliantly, Diagne was linking up the play exceptionally well. “But I think for Chelsea and for Kurt Zouma, I’m not sure that’s going to go well for him after what happened today.
“First of all, I don’t think he’s the most comfortable with his left foot so playing on the left side of the three puts a lot of pressure on him.
“We saw it for the first goal, he plays a poor ball into Jorginho with the weight of it. “For Zouma I’m not sure he’s going to be playing many games going forward after today’s performance.”
Zouma and Chelsea will be desperate to bounce back as soon as possible and with a Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Porto on Wednesday, it marks the perfect opportunity.
Tuchel could very well choose Rudiger alongside Silva for that game – with the latter not being banned because the game is in a separate competition.
