Chelsea have made a decision regarding the short-term future of Billy Gilmour, as they set out their plans for transfer deadline day

It’s transfer deadline day in England, meaning clubs right across the Premier League will be working hard as they look to try and get those last-minute deals over the line before the bell.

Whilst several clubs will be looking to get deals done, either in terms of new arrivals or departures, Chelsea appear set to be relatively quiet.

After spending more than £220million on seven new arrivals last summer, including the additions of Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Chelsea were never going to be spending big amounts of money this month, regardless of their managerial situation or league position.

Despite being continuously linked with Declan Rice of West Ham United and Borussia Dortmund ace Erling Haaland for much of the window, neither of those two will be arriving at Stamford Bridge today.

Instead, much of the focus around Chelsea and their plans for deadline day has centred around the future of midfielder Billy Gilmour. The Scotland international is keen to secure more regular first-team football during the second half of this season in the hope that he can bolster his chances of getting into Steve Clarke’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.

It was understood that the Blues were open to the idea of sending Gilmour out on loan for the remainder of the campaign, with Premier League rivals Southampton having taken an interest in the prospect of landing him on a short-term loan deal.

However, according to a report by the Daily Telegraph this morning, Chelsea have decided to change their stance on Gilmour’s short-term future, with the Thomas Tuchel – the Blues head coach – keen to keep hold of the youngster and hand him the opportunity to impress at Stamford Bridge.

Although opportunities are likely to arise over the coming weeks for Gilmour, it is unlikely that he will get as many chances in west London as he would have done out on loan.

Nevertheless, the news that Gilmour is set to stay at Stamford Bridge beyond this evening’s deadline has been greeted with a wave of appreciation from the Blues fans, who are seemingly delighted that he is staying.

Below, football.london has taken a close look at how the Chelsea supporters have responded to the news…

In Tuchel’s opening two games in charge, Gilmour has failed to make the match-day squad, suggesting that he does not creep into the former Borussia Dortmund boss’ immediate thoughts for an appearance in the Premier League, as the German continues to get to grips with his group of players.

But with Chelsea still alive and kicking in both the Champions League and FA Cup, rotation is a certainty in the weeks that lie ahead.

With that said, Gilmour will soon get the chance to prove his worth to Tuchel and restore the faith the German has shown in him by deciding against sending him out on loan on a short-term basis.
