Thomas Tuchel's verdict on Lionel Messi as press conference scheduled amid Chelsea links

The Chelsea boss has previously expressed his desire to coach Lionel Messi, who looks set to leave Barcelona this summer for pastures new.

Lionel Messi’s next move is all the talk of the football world right now, and Chelsea are one of the clubs reportedly looking to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Blues owner Roman Abramovich is requesting an ‘urgent meeting’ with the Argentine’s entourage. Messi, who called time on his incredible 21-year association with Barcelona on Thursday, reportedly came close to moving to Stamford Bridge back in 2014.

But any deal for the 34-year-old will prove tricky ,with French giants Paris Saint-Germain reportedly already in direct talks with the player and his father and agent, Jorge. Further complicating the situation is the imminent transfer of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, whose return to Chelsea will set the club back £97million, limiting their financial capability to meet Messi’s wage demands.

But, if an agreement could be reached, Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel would be an extremely happy man, having spoken previously of his desire to work with Messi. Following PSG’s defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in 2020, Tuchel was asked whether he would be interested in bringing the Argentine to Paris.

“He’s very welcome!” he replied. “Which coach says no to Messi?!”

At the time the German did not think that Messi, who recorded a staggering 672 goals and 305 assists across 778 games for Barca, would leave the Catalan club.

“I think Messi finishes his career in Barcelona,” he added. “He IS Barcelona and it’s good like that.”

However, it has been confirmed that Messi will be on the move this summer, and Barcelona have confirmed that the Argentine will hold a press conference at Camp Nou on Sunday.

It is due to take place at 11am.

Thomas Tuchel could sell £29m Chelsea star who Frank Lampard liked after West Brom loss
The Frenchman has been frozen out by Tuchel in recent weeks with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen preferred. And he has done himself no favours with his showing on Saturday, marking a fall from grace considering his status under Lampard. With the Chelsea legend at the helm, Zouma found himself a regular in the starting XI but now he looks set to leave on a permanent basis at the end of the season. The former St-Etienne star is valued at £29m and has attracted attention from the likes of Everton and Leicester in the past. And Owen Hargreaves also believes that the 26-year-old could leave in the transfer window. “I think for Chelsea and for Kurt Zouma, I’m not sure that it’s going to go well for him after what happened today,” the former England international told Premier League Productions after the game. “I don’t think he’s going to play many games going forward after today’s performance.”
